- You think export is tough? Try 3 steps to go global
Writing this post after experimenting with exports for a couple of years now, I now understand why Indian businesses are yet to be their best and get international. These reasons are not complicated and only requires an in-depth analysis of a company and its product or service. I want you to question yourself on the coming questions and figure out your own international journey. Q1: Is my product/ service export worthy? While we are often clear about we are building and selling in India, it is often a scary affair to think of exports. Global demand, quality standards, cross border transportation and international Finance are some of the top thoughts that bundle our heads. We seriously start doubting our product/service and its worth. Let us take a case where an imaginary company "KelaChips Pvt ltd.(KCP)" sells banana chips domestically and now wants to go global. This is the first thing they should do: Goal 1: Re-position KCP will start with an extensive analysis of the Banana chips industry covering the demand, supply, CAGR and competition, both domestic and international, gathering data from gov. databases (https://tradestat.commerce.gov.in/eidb/default.asp) & trademap based on their HS CODE (Every specific product or service will have a HS CODE). They will then specifically focus on the statistics of top domestic competitors that export, study their market reports extenstively and their export sales data. The next step for KCP will be to prepare a comparison sheet with metrics like product features, pricing, certifications etc with the top domestic competitors. Based on the comparison, they should analyse what they need to add in their bundle of offer. For example, a key competitor might be having an ISO certification that is mandatory to export. They must refer the Agro industry export promotion council (APEDA) which can help them answer many regulations related querries. Finally, A target market has to be chosen for their product and a Go-to market strategy has to be made based on strategic positioning of the company & their competitors to ensure that they are filling an important gap in the chosen international market. Let us assume KCP identify France as their target market. Q2: But how will I promote & market my products abroad? While we all want to market our products abroad, we often don't know the marketing & distributing channels that are extremely important to understand before we plan our marketing. Our marketing might be appropriate for our fellow indians but will our international customers really understand and give a chance to your product/service? Let us see what "KelaChipa Pvt Ltd.(KCP)" needs to do to market their products in France : Goal 2: Re-brand Before jumping in the target market of France and testing the waters, KCP will re-brand their product based on suitable analysis of their consumer preferences of French customers. They will prepare a company profile, pricing sheet for all product types while considering international currencies and their price differences. They should not spend too much time tinkering with the pricing & quality in the intial 3-6 months as it is very difficult to understand foreign demand before they actually start get enquiries. Now, they need to Identify distribution channels for their product. Banana chips are sold through retailers(Indian stores & foreign stores), global e-commerce(Amazon FR) and local e-commerce(For eg. Auchan) To get to those distribution channels, they first need to have a solid web presence that will make them look legible in the eyes of international clients & customers. This web presence will be made by executing a digital marketing plan (Website promotion, Social Media, Blogs, SEO) that would help them get inbound leads who approach them directly. Finally, they should go full force in following a prepared outbound marketing approach. This, in simple terms means, reaching out to the potential leads through calls, emails and trade fairs. The duration for the complete marketing package should ideally be between 30 - 70 days before they start getting 10+ enquiries and eventually land a customer after 100 - 120 days. Q3: OK but I don't know any procedures. Will that stop my exports? Some of us have already reached the level of getting export enquiries and even recieved purchase orders but are still skeptical of exporting. The reason being the complicated procedures that come along with the process. It can be daunting to think of arranging every stakeholder to complete an order but with patience and proper understanding, it can be easily managed. Let us see how KCP executed their export order from France. Goal 3: Execute After sending the samples of Banana chips to a supermarket in France and getting approval, KCP needs to calculate the export price and for that KCP will have to discus freight prices with the current transport companies & CHAs(Custom house agents), calculate their own cost prices, add margins and come up with a price that would help them enter a foreign market. KCP will also need to decide on the incoterms that will decide the payment terms (advance, LC etc) and delivery terms between them and the importer. Post this, KCP will send a pre-forma invoice or a confirmation email with the pricing for the potential quantity required by the supermarket. (Kindly note that this is not the main invoice and can not be used in the international arbitration court) Once this price is accepted by the importer, they will send a purchase order. This purchase order will inform KCP about what product and in what quantity does the supermarket requires the product from KCP. After recieving the purchase order, KCP will have to arrange transporation, finance, and insurance with multiple stakeholders. Post this, they will have to execute the export order, recieve the payment(depending on the incoterm) and settle the regulations stipulated by the RBI. Kindly note that there are many more detailed steps to be followed for executing a succesful exports and these are a summary of the entire process. I know this will sound overwhelming if you have not done any exports. And that is why I am here to be your export consultant. - Essential oils and anti-ageing
Introduction In this 21st century, with technology - based options like plastic surgery, laser rejuvenation surgeries and Botox chemicals, one questions seems to come up again and again – Is there a place for natural, herbal products? Natural and herbal Anti-ageing therapies have been used since ancient times. One such product which has been mentioned frequently in Ayurvedic texts is “Kumkumadi Tailam”. Literally translated as “Saffron Oil”, it is claimed that “Kumkumadi Tailam” can rejuvenate and renew skin cells brightening the skin and giving it a youthful and healthy appearance. Typical ingredients used in this oil are Saffron, Indian Licorice, Sandalwood oil, Turmeric oil, Sesame oil amongst others. Anti-ageing oils have been prevalent not just in ancient India, but in other parts of the world as well. Study of antique Egyptian notes recorded on papyrus & engravings on the temple walls have revealed precious information about the ancient Egyptian cosmetics & essential oils. Upon inspection of remains of containers & bottles of perfumes, it has been revealed that essential oils used in Anti-ageing treatments amongst others were extracted using a sophisticated technique termed as “Enfleurage”. In this process a layer of vegetable fat was used for absorbing the essence of the aromatic flowers, which was then dissolved in alcohol & the “absolute of that floral” thus achieved were used in cosmetics & toiletries. These oils were also applied, inhaled & even ingested to achieve Anti-ageing results. Ageing commences as soon as we are born. As skin is the part of our body, most visible to others, ageing becomes even more apparent once the quality of skin is examined. Since looking younger is a desire as pervasive as it is deep seated in human psyche, we as humans have consistently tried to hide the visible symptoms of the undeniable passing of time. There has been a consistent increase in the interest in reducing the appearance of ageing with the use of plant extracts and herbs. Plants produce a great variety of organic compounds some of which are responsible in reversing or mitigating the effects of ageing like Terpenoids, Alkaloids, and Phenolic Compounds. Science behind ageing and how do herbs help? There are basically two types of ageing: 1. Chronological ageing: Changes in skin resulting from the passage of time alone. Causes of Chronological ageing: Substantial evidence exists to support that ageing is associated with free radicals which damage the skin by various “Oxidants” or an effect of certain inflammatory elements. “Oxidation” or “Oxidative Cell Metabolism” is one of the bigger causes of Chronological ageing as the body and especially some parts of the skin are routinely exposed to stressful environmental factors such as pollutants and UV radiation, which produce many aggressive oxidants that damage all the biological skin cell membranes. Compounds that solve Chronological ageing with anti- oxidative properties are usually found in: a. Coffee Oil: The extract of the fruits of the coffee plant (Coffea arabica) has shown to exhibit antioxidant activity mediated by potent antioxidant polyphenols, especially Chlorogenic acid, condensed Proanthocyanidins, Quinic acid, and Ferulic acid. This extract showed improving fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and overall appearance. b. Turmeric Extract: Curcumin from the roots of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been known to show antioxidative properties. c. Star anise Extract: Japanese Star Anise essential oil has good antioxidant, anti-elastase, and anti-inflammatory effects and low cytotoxicity in human cell lines. d. Pomegranate Extracts: It has also been shown that the Pomegranate (Punica granatum) extract protects human skin against UV induced oxidative stress and markers of photo-ageing, and therefore, might be a useful supplement in skin care products. e. Amla Extract: Extract of Emblica officinalis fruit has an antioxidant activity related to UV protection (against photo-ageing). f. Lavender Oil: Lavender Oil (Lavandula) is known to possess anti-oxidative properties which counters Oxidative Cell Metabolism and mitigates the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. 2. Photo - ageing: Changes in skin due to chronic exposure to the Sun. Causes of Photo - ageing: Tissue injury due to ultraviolet exposure results in destabilization of certain compounds in the skin such as Collagen. A few years ago, this interesting approach to account for presence of wrinkle appearance as well as loss of dermal elasticity was researched. It was concluded that Prolonged exposure leads to “Skin Matrix Damage” which usually manifests in wrinkles. Clinical presentation of Photo-ageing includes dryness of the skin, irregular pigmentation-freckles, wrinkling, and inelasticity. Compounds that solve Photo – ageing with tissue injury alleviating properties are usually found in: a. Gotu Kola Extract: Gotu Kola Extract (Centella asiatica) has certain protective effects and promotes Collagen synthesis which results in Anti – inflammatory effect on the skin. b. Amla Extract: Amla extract (Emblica officinalis) elevates the mitochondrial activity of human skin fibroblasts and promotes production of procollagen. c. Coriander Oil: It has also been observed that Coriander oil cream mitigated UV-induced skin photoaging. Moreover, these pharmaceutical dosage forms significantly increased skin Collagen. d. Immortelle Oil: Immortelle Oil (Helicrysum italicum) is known to reverse the effect of UV exposure, which reduces the synthesis of Collagen and Elastin, the loss of which results in visible signs of ageing like wrinkles or sagging of the skin. Some Natural ingredients having anti-ageing properties widely found in India are: 1. Extracts of Liquorice (Glycyrriza glabra), Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Pomegranate (Punica granatum), fruits of Amla (Embelica officinale), leaves of Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica), dried bark of Cinnamon (Cinnamon zeylanicum), and fresh gel of Aloe vera in varied concentrations showed improvement of the skin hydration. These beneficial effects might be due to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and UV protective properties of these herbal ingredients. 2. Sandalwood Oil: Some studies indicate that Sandalwood oil may have anti-inflammatory properties and may also restore moisture to the skin. When the skin is properly hydrated, it can combat manifestation of wrinkles. 3. Rosemary Oil: Rosemary oil (Salvia Rosmarinus) is known to for its anti-microbial and antioxidant properties. Its antioxidants help by breaking down “Free Radicals” which are responsible for reducing skin’s elasticity. How IE can help the buyer in identifying, dealing with Indian suppliers? - Wild Indian Vetiver Oil : A magical natural coolant
What is Wild Indian Vetiver Essential oil ? The essential oil distilled from roots of Vetiver found abundantly in the wilderness of North India is what we call as Wild Indian Vetiver oil. A magical aromatic crop, Vetiver, has been used for centuries in India for its various applications. Vetiver's secret lies in its root which has a very characteristic fragrance and is often used by world class perfumers as a base note. Known to be one of the most complex oils known, khus, scientifically known as Vetiver zizanioides offers unique characteristics and is one of the most complex oils known to research scientists and poses a real challenge as Modern science has been able to isolate out more than 150 aromatic molecules from vetiver but still there are ones that cannot be identified. How is Wild Vetiver different from other Vetivers? A casual olfactory analysis of the cultivated wild north indian variety would lead one to believe that they are quite similar in nature with Vetiveria ziazaniodes, the roots found extensively in countries like Haiti, the Reunion Islands, Java, and South India. However, the commonly found variety, Vetiveria ziazaniodes, has deep, mysterious, rich and earthy notes while Wild vetiver has powerful earthy diffusiveness with a multidimensional profile. Grown & found in the wilderness of North India, especially in the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Harayana and Madhya Pradesh, Botanists would describe wild indian vetiver oil as "seedy" vetiver because it spreads its population through seeds compared to the cultivated variety of vetiver which must be propagated through slips and by division. Some other precise differences quoted from the research of Mr. Jacques Pogel (Chanel perfume creator) are (https://www.vetiver.org/UP_Vetiver.htm): Studies of oils from various producing regions(the plant is also cultivated in India particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu) indicate that all varieties except the North-Indian Khus oil are chemically similar A characteristic feature of this type is the presence of the large amount of laevorotary khusilal(a rare C-14 class of terpenoid) which is in fact responsible for the strong laevorotation of this oil; this compound is absentin the typical dextrorotary oils(Haiti,, Renunion, Java and South India. Applications of Wild indian vetiver oil: Perfumery: In the hands of a skilled perfumer, wild indian vetiver oil can produce outstanding effects in fougere, chypre and oriental type compositions. When using this oil in creating perfumes, a perfumer must remember that It is, in effect, a rather dominant note and likes to be a front seat driver which is quite different from sandalwood that moves to the background and only modestly appears as a solid contributor in a fragrance. For aspirational perfumers, this oil offers great opportunities for people to dive into the adventurous world of blending their own fragrances and essences. Some of the oils with which it blends nicely are patchouli, cinnamon bark, linaloe berry, sandalwood, oakmoss, opopanax and mimosa. Flavors: Having grown up in India, we have always cherished the refreshing and classic khus sherbets(syrups) that cools the bodies in summers and helps in balancing the body temperature in extreme heat. The hydrosol, a by-product while distilling the oil, is the raw material that is used in preparing this delicious sherbet. Due to climate change, the increasing temperature in Europe has made Europeans victims of extreme heat and a mild khus mocktail can just be the perfect drink that they are looking for. Buying Indian vetiver oil from authentic vendors in 2022 To make sure that you only procure vetiver oil from authentic locations, we have travelled across North India to identify the most reliable, affordable and passionate farmers of khus. This video below is from one of our journeys in uttrakhand’s ramnagar at the foothills of himalayas where we teamed up with a farmer who distills exotic vetiver oil. We have smelled many samples of vetiver oil but the one that he distills is extraordinary in its sweetness and its connection to the land. Why Innoveo Exports? Indian housewives like to layer them inside their clothes both to repel insects and to impart their sublime fragrance to the material with whom they come in contact. In Southern India, fibres of vetiver roots are woven into mats which impart a cooling effect when slept upon. The most renowned use to which the roots are put is for making screens which, since ancient times, have been hung over windows during the hot months. It is one of the most unique forms of "air conditioning" and during the day, these mats are periodically sprinkled with water so that when any chance breeze blows through them a cooling & subtle fragrance is immersed to the air. Khus slippers are made from fibres of vetiver roots.
- Geranium Revolution in Western India
Geranium essential oil, extracted from geranium flower is probably one of the most coveted ingredients in the flavor & fragrance industry thanks to its great rose-like odor. Derived from steam distillation of the leaves of geranium plant (Pelargonium graveolent), Geranium essential Oil is also known as rose geranium. The secret behind how companies have been creating classic rose scented geranium products by using geranium is its high percentage of its major chemical component “geraniol”. Geranium Oil extraction from geranium plant is very valuable and India has been at the forefront of cultivating and distilling exquisite geranium oil that can be used in multiple industries and will foster development of the global geranium oil market in the years to come. Geranium Essential Oil in India In India, Geranium essential oil cultivation is on a rise and a geranium plant revolution is changing the fortunes of farmers in the state of Maharashtra. With correct guidance from government research centers known as KVK or Krishi Vigyan Kendra as well as with great monetary support through incentives under the Aroma mission run by the government, many farmers have transitioned from their traditional crops to cultivating aromatic crops like geranium plant. In Uttar Pradesh ,Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants CIMAP, which is a frontier plant research laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is providing geranium plant samplings to many farmers to promote Aroma mission. This whole scenario of cultivating geranium helps the farmer to sell the oil extracted from the geranium plant for large profit margins which is one of the key geranium oil benefits for these farmers. Real Stories Build Real Experiences – How is Geranium Essential Oil Extracted at Farms in India? Above is the photo of Mr. Srikant who is the sole farmer from Gujarat who started cultivating geranium essential oil in his village. When we visited him at his farm and did our vendor evaluation, we were surprised to learn about how he is now getting regular visitors and has piqued an interest from farmers in this state. We also got his oil tested and smell tested the beautiful natural aroma of Geranium essential oil to make sure that our international customers only get the most natural and enticing aromatic raw materials. Adulteration of Geranium essential oil - The wake up call With the current demand of natural rose scented geranium products, we understand the increasing demand for cheaper rose alternatives like geranium oil from countries like India. However, before sourcing from India, buyers must do thorough study of their vendors as just to incur extra profit, certain vendors in India indulge in malpractices such as adulteration of the essential oil with cheaper oils like vegetable oils or with synthetic materials. Primarily, Phenylethyl alcohol is the most widely used synthetic adulterant used to mask pure geranium essential oil. The Common Adulteration Practices for the Geranium Essential Oil are: The addition of cheaper essential oils of the same plant but from another country- Geranium Bourbon – Addition of Geranium plant from China The addition of Cheap (Nature Identical) synthetics isolated from other oils Rose geranium essential oil – Addition of Phenyl ethyl alcohol, Rhodinol fractions and scented geranium Is it Possible to Procure Ethically Sourced Geranium Essential Oil from India? Working with farmers like Mr. Srikant and many other stakeholders across India has helped us in understanding greatly about the ground-level issues that they face and the rampant exploitation of these farmers by traders who buy their products at cheap, adulterate them and inflate their prices while giving almost nil traceability to the buyers. To solve this problem, We at Innoveo Exports have created a system to identify ground level farmers who cultivate & distill natural aromatic essential oils while sourcing directly from them and removing all kinds of intermediaries. - Can your vendor export if their certifying body is banned in India?
A lot of confusion has been observed in last few months as multiple Certification Bodies or CBs that certify companies/ farmer groups or grower groups and other individual farmers for organic certification have been banned in India. These CBs,which need to be approved by APEDA(Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) were notably from the EU and US and were banned to provide any sort of certification to vendors exporting organic products because of allowing multiple consignments with higher ETO than accepted pesticide residue value. To know more about the crisis pertaining to ETO(Ethylene Oxide) in detail, please read out blog - Should you buy Agri raw materials from India ? The Dilemma over Ethylene Oxide? Which are the Certification Bodies banned by APEDA? European Committee on Organic Production derecognised five CBs — CU Inspections India, Ecocert India , Indian Organic Certification Agency (Indocert), Lacon Quality Certifications and OneCert International APEDA followed up the derecognition of the five firms by suspending accreditation to Aditi Organic Certification for a year and banning four others — CU Inspections India , ECOCERT India, Indian Organic Certification Agency (Indocert) and OneCert International — from registering any new organic processor or exporter for organic products certification after some shipments cleared by them failed to meet the norms for ETO presence. Does that mean that new Vendors certified by these banned CBs not export? These 5 CBs can still provide USDA NOP certification and therefore if vendor has a NOP certification by a CB registered by USDA Organic, they can export to the US. For Europe, these vendors would still require a NPOP certificate by another CB registered with APEDA. It would also require for the new CB to be registered on TRACES run by European Committee on Organic Production. The banned CBs like OneCert recently sent an email to all the vendors with NPOP (Organic certificate for India) saying that they can get a NOC(No objection certificate) from that particular CB to get a TC(Transaction certificate) from their new Certifying body. Once they get the TC from the small certifying body, OneCert will generate another TC under USDA and allow them export their produce to the particular importing country. - MINIMALLY PROCESSED: The two word secret to white tea :)
Do you know that there is another type of tea apart from the “Herbal tea” packets thrown at you in the supermarket ? It is called the “The White Tea”. Sounds royal? IT IS. Since people all over have become more conscious of their lifestyles and have developed a newfound interest to find the best ingredients with the highest impact on their bodies, newer varieties of tea are gaining worldwide popularity. It also has a slight edge in terms of providing better health benefits than green tea and ranges from treating heart diseases to helping to fight cancer but the most popular benefit for which white tea is known is that it is very good for skin. But is it like a different plant? White tea, Green tea and Black tea, all come from the same tea plant. They differ in harvest time and the drying process. White tea is closely related to green tea but after the leaves are harvested, they go through a slightly different process. They are only harvested in the spring and the harvest process makes it one of the most expensive tea varieties. Firstly, for white tea, the plucking process is done before the leaves fully open where the leaves still have this white fine hairs (That's why it is called white tea) which protects the tea plant’s new growth from Insects. Secondly, these leaves are dried to prevent oxidising. They are left to wilt or fade where the leaves are exposed to air a little more before they get heat roasted. Wait but why “Indian” white tea ? White tea from India is more tannic compared to those grown in Yunnan region in China which are smoky and earthy. Improper extraction practices are followed by some producers and ultimately if the storage conditions are inappropriate, it might lead to oxidation of oils which leads to a change in the quality of the product. Many times adulteration with metanil yellow or lead chromate is witnessed to enhance the color of the product. - Indian jasmine absolute and its importance in the world of perfumery
For centuries, flowers have been a unique part of cultures, especially Indian culture and tradition, from medicinal properties to fragrance to a symbol of love and beauty. The diverse growing conditions in India make it home to a wide variety of flowering plants. Here we describe jasmine oil and how it is used as an ingredient in the creation of world-class perfumes. Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is widely known as a symbol of love and beauty and is found in various parts of India. It is often used in garlands at weddings and even in garlands honoring gods. Jasmine in India is believed to have 300 sub-categories with local names such as Mogra, Motia, Chameli, Malli pu. Is Jasmine Essential Oil and Jasmine Absolute the same? When looking for aromatic jasmine plant parts for making products, we are often confused with the terms jasmine essential oils and jasmine absolutes. Let us describe them one by one. First, essential oils are liquid oils extracted from plant parts by steam distillation and have lighter molecules that are naturally volatile and very aromatic. In comparison, absolutes are usually obtained by solvent extraction and the resulting product has heavier molecules with aromatic components that make it perfect for perfumery use. What makes India one of the best producers of jasmine absolutes? It is quite simple, the conditions. India is privileged to have diverse and sufficiently favorable climatic conditions for flower cultivation and affordable labor for growing these plants. The biggest advantage is that these flowers require much less land and water for production. In India, jasmine is grown throughout the country, but commercial cultivation is limited to places such as Coimbatore, Madurai and Dindigul (Tamil Nadu); Bangalore, Bellary, Mysore and Kolar (Karnataka); Kannauj, Jaunpur and Gazipur (Uttar Pradesh). Udaipur, Jaipur, Ajmer and Kota (Rajasthan); Ranaghat, Kolaghat, Pancskura (West Bengal); parts of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. What benefits does Jasmin Absolute have in Fragrance & Cosmetics Industry? The benefits of Jasmine Absolute can be seen in the application of multi-purpose products in various industries. Two of the most important industries that use the benefits of Jasmine Absolute are: Perfumery: Deep, exotic jasmine is an excellent choice for adding rich fragrance to luxurious compositions. A unique olfactory diamond, jasmine offers a number of facets to the perfumer. Jasmine is usually the heart note of a perfume. It adds roundness, roundness or flesh to the perfume. Classically, it is often associated with the rose: Liu by Guerlain, N°5 by Chanel, Joy originel by Patou, 24 Faubourg by Hermès, Alien by Mugler, Organza by Givenchy, J'adore by Dior, Jasmin Noir by Bvlgari... Cosmetics: In the cosmetic world, Jasmine Absolute is known for its moisturizing properties and its ability to even out skin tone and give a radiant complexion. It is a wonderful addition to rejuvenating formulations for a vibrant, energized look. Why are absolutes preferred to essential oils in perfumery? Absolutes are extracted by a different process than essential oils and have a stronger scent than essential oils with a fresher smell that is closest to the plant material, making them most suitable for perfumery. The only drawback is that traces of solvents must be removed after solvent extraction before they can be used in perfumery. Jasmine Absolute Extraction Process The delicate, star-shaped flowers of this night-blooming plant are too delicate for steam distillation. The extraction process requires diluting the flowers in a solvent, resulting in an "absolute" essential oil. In addition to its aphrodisiac properties, jasmine is a fantastic nourishing oil. Jasmine Absolute is obtained by solvent extraction of the petals. It has an intense floral character and produces a musky, masculine scent. Jasmine absolute is known to round out other essences in perfumery and is widely used in perfumery, sometimes referred to as the king ingredient of perfume Why is Jasmine Absolute Oil so expensive? Jasmine is an absolute. It is so delicate that it cannot be properly extracted by distillation. Another reason for the higher price is the unavailability of the jasmine absolute plant and the amount of labor required to produce it. We should use these oils sparingly, not because they are expensive, but because the earth has made a great sacrifice to give them to us. With such a delicate bloom, how can growers preserve the delightful fragrance of Jasmine Absolute? One of our farmers explains that harvesting in the early hours of the morning, when it is still dark and the buds are still closed, ensures that the fragrance and the jasmine flower remain intact during transport for extraction. There are over 50 thousand hectares of jasmine in the region, but only about 5% of that is used to extract the wonderful absolute jasmine that is so prized. At Innoveo Exports, we strive to source these classic jasmine absolutes directly from farmers in the old towns and small producers in these regions. We follow a simple three step process to simplify the purchase for you We would love to share some of our samples with you, understand your specific needs and be a part of your journey to create world-class perfumes. - Should you buy Agri raw materials from India ? The Dilemma over Ethylene Oxide
Many exporters, manufacturers, food boards and export promotion councils are working together with the government to get over the crisis of Ethylene oxide in International trade. Before we know the solutions, first let’s dig a little into what exactly is the issue. What is the current situation? Since April 1 this year, over a dozen consignments from India have been rejected due to this. Five certifying agencies are set to be blacklisted from certifying organic product exports from India by the European Commission as Indian shippers, cleared by them, failed to meet the norms for ethylene oxide presence in their consignments, particularly sesame (til/gingelly). The presence of ethylene oxide has been a major deterrent in the imports of agricultural produce from India in the last few years and now a large majority of importers have raised & doubts on the credibility of Indian exports. What led to this crisis? Changes in SPS( Sanitary & PhytoSanitary Measures) in last 5 few years: The number of SPS measures notified to the WTO(World Trade Organization) has increased exponentially and standards have consistently evolved in national, international and individual supply chains. This is even more prominent in major markets like the US, the EU and Japan, where SPS requirements such as maximum residue limits of various Plant Protection Products (PPPs) and levels of contamination have grown more and more stringent. Many countries have implemented stringent controls like MRL on Agri-products. What exactly is MRL and why should you care? MRL (Maximum Residue Limit) and Ethylene Oxide: MRL limits are defined as safe limits that are supposed to define the maximum expected level of a pesticide (or any other agricultural chemical) on a food commodity after its safe and authorized use. These limits are food product specific and serve as monitoring tools to prevent illegal and/or excessive use of a pesticide and ensure compliance with the registered label. However, Foods that contain residue above the MRL aren’t necessarily dangerous, as long as the calculated acute reference dose is not exceeded. Ethylene oxide (EO) is an insecticide which has colorless, flammable, highly reactive properties as well as is a toxic gaseous organic compound with a characteristic ethereal odor. It is a man-made chemical that has the formula C2H4O that can destroy most viruses, bacteria and fungus including bacterial spores. Due to this property, it is used to sterilize food items, spices, medical and pharmaceutical products. Why did Indian exporters & manufacturers shift from Steam sterilization to Ethylene Oxide? Ethylene oxide sterilization is the best way to sterilize food items when compared with the steam sterilization as Steam sterilization can cause the natural color pigment to fade, reduce nutrition and increase moisture content, which creates favorable conditions for growth of bacteria and fungus and produce toxic substances like mycotoxins. In 2017, due to microbial contamination with Salmonella SppEuropean Union (EU) amended the regulation (EC) No 669/2009, that led to the increase in number of rejections. To avoid this, food and agricultural commodities exported from India were sterilized with ethylene oxide to inhibit the growth of Salmonella during storage and transportation. Threats related to ETO and it’s MRL: While sterilizing with Ethylene Oxide, It must be ensured that after sterilization, the samples should be aerated for 24 hours to remove the residue which is left during the process. If the aeration is not validated properly there is a chance of presence of ethylene oxide residue in samples which can lead to the formation of another toxic non-volatile compound, 2- Chloroethanol which is toxic to kidneys, causing damage to heart, liver and kidneys and respiratory failure. It could be fatal in some cases. Due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic concerns, EU has proposed separate Maximum residual limits (MRLs) for ethylene oxide and its primary metabolite 2-chloroethanol in different food and agriculture commodity ranging from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/kg (Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/868). (EU MRL for different food products) https://ec.europa.eu/food/plant/pesticides/eu-pesticidesdatabase/mrls/?event=details&pest_res_ids=91&product_ids=&v=1&e=search.pr What steps are being taken to solve the issue? Now that we have some background knowledge on the subject, let us understand if Indian exports can be trusted with regards to ETO and MRL. Government support: APEDA (The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Indian Government) has come up with many circulars and advisories for exporters to make sure that correct steps are taken to avoid any issues in exporting organic products. http://apeda.gov.in/apedawebsite/organic/Important_announcement.htm Prof Arpita Mukherjee, ICRIER,(Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations ) suggests that “ There are several facets to the MRL challenge that India needs to work on simultaneously. A careful analysis needs to be done for each product and market, to ascertain the bare minimum standards that need to be met. Only then, we can proceed to develop the necessary mechanism to ensure compliance.” A successful case study: Product traceability is one potent way to overcome SPS barriers, as has been seen in the case of mangoes, fresh grapes, peanuts and eggplant exports. After facing multiple bans due to MRL issues, grape industry players engaged in comprehensive interactions with APEDA, research centres, regulatory bodies, agronomists, etc. This helped them understand the most appropriate crop management practices to attain desired MRLs. They also expanded the list of chemicals being tested and ensured traceability to the farm level. How can you make sure you buy from a verified seller and get seamless imports from India? While these non-tariff barriers and issues from importing from India might look tough to encounter, an even bigger issue arises when you need to select your vendors for your products, communicate with them on several issues and have reliability on their products & their service. This is where we at Innoveo Exports can be your single source destination for buying agricultural raw materials from India. We identity & partner with capable vendors as well as get all products tested from NABL(National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) laboratories in India to ensure that the MRL for ETO is less than 0.1 mg for EU, less than 940 mg/kg for the US and less than 7 mg/kg for Canada. We also follow stringent guidelines based on important metrics like product quality, negotiate on your behalf to provide you with top quality imports at reasonable prices while you can leave all your sourcing worries on us. While we are currently limited to natural essential oils and related products, we are quickly expanding our portfolio for other agro products and would be happy to take any agricultural raw material enquiry.
